This is the fourth installment in a wonderful series that records music from each city during the era of the Hanseatic League—an economic alliance of European cities that lasted from the Middle Ages through the 17th century. Following Volume 1, “Stralsund” (555578); Volume 2, “Gdańsk (Danzig)” (555647); and Volume 3, “Magdeburg” (555710), this latest release focuses on “Hamburg.” Hamburg flourished as a trading city from the Middle Ages onward. This ancient city, a member of the Hanseatic League from its earliest days, also had a thriving musical scene; records indicate that by the mid-17th century, an ensemble called the “Chorus Musicus,” composed of a choir and instrumentalists, was holding regular concerts. This recording captures the church music of Hamburg from that era, reflecting how magnificent music resounded throughout the city year-round. Hieronymus and Jakob Praetorius, father and son from the renowned Praetorius family of musicians, were active as organists in Hamburg and were among the very first to introduce the Venetian style of polyphonic choral composition to Germany. This CD also includes works composed for multiple choirs. Johann Schop, a master violinist known as the composer of the chorale melody famously set to music by Bach in “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” led the Hamburg City Orchestra. His “Now, O My Soul, Praise the Lord” is an elaborate work consisting of six vocal parts and two instrumental parts, with a five-part ripieno joining midway, bringing the total to a maximum of thirteen parts. Dietrich Becker, who also made a name for himself as an outstanding violinist, succeeded Schop as the leader of the city orchestra; his technical prowess is evident in his virtuosic “Three-Part Sonata.” Matthias Weckmann, a student of Heinrich Schütz, was a composer who founded the musical ensemble “Collegium Musicum” and contributed to the development of music in Hamburg; “A Strife Has Arisen” is a 14-part religious concerto featuring vocal parts instrumental parts. Also included are three pieces by Christoph Bernhard—a student of Schütz and a close friend of Weckmann—including the simply structured “Shout for Joy to the Lord,” featuring two sopranos, as well as two pieces by Thomas Selle—the most important figure in 17th-century Hamburg’s music scene—including the large-scale “Hail, Hamburg!” in praise of the city.
