On March 18, 1860, at a concert by the Viennese orchestra society “Oethelpe,” works by Ernst II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1818–1893), and Suppé’s “Symphonic Fantasy,” which used the Duke’s themes, were premiered to great acclaim. Ernst II, a liberal politician who composed operas such as Casilda and is also known for his patronage of Johann Strauss II, and Suppé, who served as music director of the Theater an der Wien. Although they differed in social standing, the two shared a mutual respect for each other’s talent as composers. Suppé made full use of his advanced compositional techniques to weave the Duke’s captivating themes into a magnificent symphony. Although Suppé would later make a name for himself with operettas such as Boccaccio, he also demonstrated his exceptional skill in serious, highly artistic works like this symphony and his Requiem. The “12 Spanish Dances,” which grace the second half of this album, are a collection of lively and passionate miniatures evoking the spirit of Spain. Written for the concert hall rather than as dance accompaniment, they feature ever-changing tempos and rhythms, with the famous “Hota” melody making an appearance throughout. Naxos Japan
