The Symphony No. 3, written around the same time as the Piano Concerto No. 1 and the ballet Swan Lake, is an exceptional work among Tchaikovsky's symphonies in that it begins in a major key and consists of five movements. Abravanel's lucid conducting clearly characterizes each movement, while accurately highlighting the elements of folk dances, and the bright sound of the orchestra makes for an enjoyable recording. Francesca da Rimini" is a piece that tends to be rather heavy-handed and austere, but Abravanel and the Utah Symphony clearly convey the dramatic development of the piece, and the climax of the piece is spectacular. The recording is very effective, with the brass and woodwinds coming through clearly and naturally in a spacious sound field with little muddiness. *The booklet includes a photo of the jacket as it appeared when the recording was first released, as well as a commentary on the original recording.
