Lully, Jean-Baptiste (1632-1687)
Description:
The third recording of Lully's Grand Motets by an elite group of musicians, which will make you realize the true value of Lully's music! The third recording of Lully's Grand Motets, which will be performed in the chapel of the Château de Versailles in France, where the interpretation of ancient music reflecting the study of works before the 18th century has been popular, features Stéphane Fugé, who is highly regarded as an exceptional talent for the 21st century. The program begins with "Rejoice, Gallia, Rejoice" celebrating the birth of the first male heir to Louis XIV, and continues with "God is Known in the Land of the Jews" written two years before Lully's sudden death, covering the period when the composer was most firmly established in the French royal family. In addition, for the first time in this series, we have included "Magnificat" by Du Mont, who was welcomed by the royal family before Lully and was a pioneer in the establishment of church music in the era of Louis XIV. The "Magnificat" is also included. The 25 to 37-member chorus includes many unique soloists such as Gwendoline Blondere, Claire Lefriatre, Cyril Oviti, and Marc Moyon, as well as up-and-coming Japanese singers such as Kumi Sakamoto and Ayako Yukawa. In addition, there is a large orchestra of ancient instruments, including two organs and two harpsichords each, and depending on the piece, over 30 string players (Marie van Rijn on organ, Emmanuelle Jacques on low strings, Melanie Flahault on recorders and bassoon...). The sound produced by the orchestra (with Marie van Rijn on organ, Emmanuelle Jacques on bass strings, and Melanie Fraud on recorder and bassoon...) is not only magnificent, as was required for the performance of these works at the time, but also flexible enough to accommodate the subtlety of the composers' detailed and thoughtful use of sound. With their extremely broad range of expression, they pursue the supreme art of 17th century French royal chapel music, bringing out the full appeal of each work. The commentary by Thomas Laconte, a musicologist at the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, is also included (in French and English). This is a disc that will allow you to experience the true value of Lully's art, which is not limited to stage music. Naxos Japan
