The four composers on this album span three centuries, but they all knew how to make the viola sing to its fullest, highlighting its deep timbre. The unfinished sonatas of Glinka, the "father of Russian music," can be heard in the completed version by Vadim Borisovsky, the "father of Russian viola music. At the time of Borisovsky's completion, the Soviet authorities were in favor of large orchestral works and operas and paid little attention to smaller works, and support for viola instruction at conservatories was slow to develop. As a result, there were few students who studied this instrument professionally, and few new works for viola were created. Later, composers and performers collaborated to expand the repertoire for the instrument, and a work by Revol Bunin was written for Rudolf Barshai, who was also an excellent viola player. The sonatas by Shevarine and Sokolov were composed nearly 50 years apart, but both were composed as a trilogy together with the Violin Sonata and Cello Sonata. Please enjoy these lyrical works.
