Description:
Two brilliant Italian pianists use historical piano from Brahms' lifetime to get to the bottom of the composer's life! Antonio Pappano, one of the greatest Italian conductors and pianists of the 21st century, has released an album on the Arcana label featuring an astonishingly detailed chamber music performance on a historical piano from Brahms' time. Pappano's duo partner is Luigi Piovano, who is well known in Japan as cellist of the Pollini Project, solo cellist of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, and guest principal of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, and they also play the famous Galliano, an 18th century instrument. He also plays the Galliano, a famous instrument from the 18th century. Arcana, now one of Italy's leading antiquarian music labels, has made an uncompromising commitment to Brahms' world, and this new recording is sure to be of interest. It should not be overlooked that Brahms, like many German Romantic artists, continued to admire the splendor of Italy south of the Alps.At the same time in Italy, a new generation of composers gradually began to emerge, turning the country's focus from opera to instrumental music and Germany. Piovano, a gifted Italian musician who is also active as an antique instrumentalist, has taken note of this trend, and has recorded a small piece by Martucci, who was an active introducer of German music, along with Brahms' two masterpieces, the cello sonatas. Pappano, with whom Brahms had a deep relationship of mutual trust, faced the historic Steinway built in 1878 before Brahms' death, and interpreted the works with breathtaking weak tones. This is a recording to be listened to in depth along with the commentary on the interview with the two performers, which reexamines the sound of 19th century music full of yearning for the tropics and the Italian spirit of song.
