[Experience Bach as a pioneer of the 18th century, performed with the chamber ensemble that was most common at the time!] Bach distinguished himself as a master organist from a young age, and in his later years, he was known for his skillful improvisations on the harpsichord. He had many talented students, including his sons, and after moving to Leipzig and taking on the role of director of the Collegium Musicum, he went on to compose a series of double and triple concertos featuring multiple harpsichords and string instruments. According to Bach’s biographer Forkel, perhaps because there were already so many soloists, these concertos were apparently intended to be performed in a chamber ensemble setting with a single string player per part. However, today, recordings of these concertos for two harpsichords performed in such a chamber music setting are extremely rare. The latest album from Ensemble Masque—an internationally renowned early music ensemble that has frequently visited Japan for *La Folle Journée TOKYO*—covers all three of Bach’s double-manual concertos in this minimalist ensemble style typical of the period! The harpsichords used are meticulous reproductions modeled after 18th-century German instruments. Alongside the spirited solos of these two prodigies, the string section features a single player per part, with the exception of the bass line, which is layered with cello and double bass. Amid the clear, open sound made possible by this instrumentation, the complexity of the musical textures emerges with striking clarity… This rich new recording reminds us once again of Bach’s greatness; it is truly a masterpiece worthy of an Alpha release.
