Grandi, Alessandro (1590-1630)
Description:
Grandi was born in Venice in 1590 and is considered the greatest composer of motets in the Venetian school of music of the first half of the 17th century. Extremely precocious, he was appointed assistant music director of St. Mark's Basilica in 1627, and his talent was rumored at the time to rival Monteverdi's, but he died of the plague in 1630, along with his wife and ten children. This album was recorded in the beautiful surroundings of Mantova's Church of Santa Barbara by an ensemble recently formed in 2018 to perform 17th century Italian music. The album title, "Heavenly Flowers," is taken from his fifth collection of motets. The recorded works were published between 1610 and 1630, and most of them are first recordings. Because of his early death, his life and music have been scarce, and this is the first album composed entirely of his works, but this beautiful sound is sure to captivate many people. Naxos Japan
