Pianist-composer Rainbert de Leeuw, known as a unique Satie interpreter, was born in the Netherlands, a leading center of ancient music.... In recent years, he has worked with the Collegium Vocale Ghent, a long-established choral ensemble founded by Philip Herreweghe, and has already won acclaim for his album of Janacek's choral works on the Alpha label (Alpha 219). His affinity for modern works, backed by an aptitude for and deep love of contemporary works, is somewhat reminiscent of the achievements of Hans Zehnder, Gidon Kremer, and others in the Romantic period. The choral piece "The Way to the Cross," which traces Jesus' journey to the fourteen places of his crucifixion, is a unique work in which the dense and exquisite harmonic language that the composer arrived at in his later years is combined with "words" to create a unique experience.
