Description:

The elite Belgian group Scelzi Musicali, led by Nicolas Akten, is a baritone who sings and accompanies himself as well as playing theorbo, baroque harp, harpsichord, organ, and other instruments. They have made many albums of 17th century music with Ricercar, and now they have come face to face with the cantatas of Alessandro Scarlatti, one of the greatest composers of the late Italian Baroque. Alessandro Scarlatti was the father of Domenico Scarlatti, the great keyboard musician and a leading figure of the Neapolitan school of music that would later take Europe by storm. His beautifully melodic songs, which convey the charm of the poems that elegantly describe the feelings of those in love, were much sought after by influential people throughout the Italian peninsula, and many examples remain, including masterpieces performed at the "Accademia di Arcadia" in Rome (an intellectual circle that included Corelli and Bononcini). The "Accademia di Arcadia" in Rome (a circle of intellectuals that included Corelli and Bononcini). In this recording dedicated to the memory of Eriko Senba, the group's lirone and gamba player, who passed away suddenly this year (2018), Scelzi Musicali performs with a full bass ensemble, in keeping with Italian performance customs at the time of composition, and at the same time makes full use of several stringed instruments and basso da violino (a bass string instrument that existed before cellos). The singers also make full use of a number of string instruments and basso da violino (a bass string instrument that existed before the cello), and convey the charm of the work with a rich sense of color, making good use of the poetic language.
