When Arnoncourt appeared at the Salzburg Festival in 2013, it was Haydn's oratorios that he performed. The orchestra was changed for each piece: "The Four Seasons" was performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, "The Creation" by the Concentus Musicus, and "Tobia's Return" by the Orchestra La Scintilla (a period instrument orchestra made up of members of the Zurich Opera Orchestra). The "Tobia's Return" is one of Haydn's oratorios that is rarely performed, so the concert attracted a great deal of attention, including interest in the work itself.This oratorio, based on a biblical episode (the story of Tobia, who accompanies the angel Raphael on a long journey to heal her blind father), is supported by a tight structure typical of Haydn in his mature period, with dramatic music throughout, including beautiful arias. Arnoncourt tackled the work with a vigor that highlighted every note, and the excellent soloists, whom Arnoncourt recognized, sang to perfection and gave a satisfying performance. All proceeds from this concert were donated to a charity supporting the victims of the war in Sarajevo. Naxos Japan
