Description:
Agrippina, now the wife of the Roman emperor Claudio, plots to have her son Nerone succeed to the throne. The plot seemed to succeed when she took advantage of the fact that Ottone, whom Claudio had in mind as his heir, wanted to marry Poppea, but.... It became a huge success, with a record of 27 consecutive performances since its premiere at the Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo in Venice in December 1709. While presented as a complex love-hate drama of the Roman court, it cleverly satirized the politics and current affairs of the time, and its graceful music, which incorporates many quotations from the works of other composers, won the applause of audiences at the time. After a period in which operas from the Baroque period, including Handel's, were forgotten in Europe, the "Handel Renaissance," or the revival of Handel's operas, has recently been gaining momentum, and "Agrippina" has once again become one of the most popular operas of the new era.Robert Carsen's direction of this film makes use of the satire on politics and customs in the original work while skillfully incorporating contemporary Italian customs, and under the lively baton of master singer Hengelbrock, Patricia Burdon in the title role and the famous soprano de Nees, who played a role in Handel's Renaissance, provide excellent acting and singing.
