Formed in 2015 and disbanded in 2022, “Rakshasa”—the standard-bearer of Japanesque Metal—has finally made a comeback after four years of silence. Their long-awaited EP, *Melancholy Chronicles: Susanoo*, which signals their comeback, depicts four stories—including instrumental tracks rooted in Japanese culture spanning from ancient times to the Taisho era. The EP opens with “The Wind Blowing Through the Reed Fields,” an instrumental piece guided by the sound of the shamisen that evokes the timelessness of the age of the gods; followed by “Susanoo,” a raw, intense, and at times beautiful high-speed track; followed by the melodic yet somewhat somber gem “Yashaga-ike,” and then shifting gears to the pop-infused, poignant ballad “Love Letter.” This collection of exquisite tracks showcases the band’s charm and diverse facets, making it a work worthy of raising expectations as the prologue to a new story.
