Description:
The Gechingen Choir was founded by Helmut Rilling, choral conductor of the 1742 Dublin premiere version of "Handel's Messiah" by Rademann & Gechinger Kantorai; since 2016, Rilling's successor, Hans Christoph Rademann, together with his newly founded Baroque Orchestra The choir operates under the name Gehinger Kantorai. The choir is an orthodox choir rooted in the German tradition. This recording of Handel's "Messiah" is from the edition used for the first performance in Dublin, Ireland, in 1742. Inspired by his friend Charles Jennens' libretto, Handel wrote "Messiah" in about three weeks, from August 22 to September 14, 1741, a total of 53 pieces and a performance time of two hours. It was premiered in Dublin on April 13, 1742, with great success. Handel went on to revise and re-perform the work, and there are several versions of the score in use today. There is an anecdote that King George II was so moved by the "Hallelujah" part that he stood up when the work was premiered in London. Dorothee Meals is a famous German soprano. Two up-and-coming countertenors, Benno Schachtner and Tobias Knauss. Benedikt Christiansson, a remarkable tenor from Iceland. Baritone Tobias Berndt, who also studied with Fischer-Dieskau, and the soloists are also very talented. King International
