Description:
Contents Poulenc(1899-1963):Violin Sonata Pärt(b.1935):Spiegel im Spiegel(Mirror in the Mirror) Prokofiev(1891-1953):Violin Sonata No.1 in F minor op.80 Performers Paul Hoang(Violin/1742 Guarneri del Gesu(Ex-Vieniawski)) Helen Hoang (Piano) Recorded: March 29-31, 2024, New York The new recording by Paul Huang, an accomplished violinist from Taiwan, includes Pärt's "Spiegel im Spiegel" (1978) between two sonatas by Poulenc (1942-1943) and Prokofiev (1938-1946), both composed during World War II. An interesting program. Poulenc composed this sonata as a response to fascism and dedicated it to the memory of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, who was shot and killed during the Spanish Civil War in 1936.Elements such as irregular phrasing, sudden pauses, and discord attempt to capture the emotional and social whirlwind of war, and the violin pizzicato at the end of the first movement seems to evoke both rifle bullets and the guitar, the instrument that symbolizes Lorca's country. Prokofiev's sonata was also written during the war. The two musicians, Paul Huang and Helen Huang, have been a duo for 10 years and reflect their ongoing journey as musicians and human beings in this one piece. Paul Huang was born in Taiwan; began playing the violin at age 7, captivated by "its beautiful tone and rich songs"; won the 2011 Young Concert Artist International Auditions; 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant; 2017 Young Outstanding Talent She is the recipient of the Lincoln Center Emerging Artists Award, given to outstanding young talent. She has performed with the Mariinsky Orchestra under Gergiev and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Slatkin. Helen Huang, piano, is a pianist who has worked with Paul Huang for a long time.Born in Japan to Taiwanese parents, he received the Artur Rubinshtein Prize upon graduation from the Juilliard School in 2004, and further studied at Yale University. He has performed with leading American orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, and Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as chamber music and solo performances.
