This year's theme is "Love"! And Jonas Kaufmann will be the guest! Every year, the Vienna Philharmonic thrills audiences in Vienna with this monumental live concert. Along with the New Year's Concert, the "Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert" is one of the Philharmonic's most famous events and has become an established tradition of early summer in Vienna since its inception in 2004. The open-air concert, which takes place at Schönbrunn Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is broadcast live (or recorded) to more than 60 countries around the world. The concert has featured a distinguished lineup of conductors, including Gergiev, Barenboim, Welser-Möst, Maazel, Eschenbach, Mehta, and Dudamel, as well as pianist Lang Lang and soprano Netrebko. The appearance of pianist Lan Lang and soprano Netrebko also shows that this concert is regarded as one of the most important concerts for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.Sony Classical has been releasing this "Summer Night Concert" on CD and video software since 2013, and this year 2020, the 8th edition of the concert, will be the third time that maestro Valery Gergiev will take the stage, following 2011 and 2018 (his fourth in total). This year, due to the current situation regarding the containment of the new coronavirus, the Covid-19 pandemic, and government regulations, the concert, which is held annually in June, has been moved to September 18, 2020 and will be held without an audience. This year's theme is "Love," and the program includes R. Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier," Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde," Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and a suite from the film "Doctor Zhivago" by Maurice Jarre, which is highly anticipated.
