Dennis Brain, the greatest horn player of the twentieth century, at 100 A commemorative box gathering his recordings as soloist, chamber musician and chamber ensemble player 17 May 2021 marked the centenary of the birth of Dennis Brain, the greatest horn player of the twentieth century. The son of the celebrated horn player Aubrey Brain, he was discovered at the age of sixteen by the legendary EMI producer Walter Legge, who engaged him as principal horn as soon as he founded the Philharmonia Orchestra in 1945. "He had no technical problems. Over the whole range of his instrument he had mastered intonation, legato, staccato, dynamic range and, above all, a power of expression that no other horn player possessed. That all of this should be embodied in one young man was miracle enough. But there was a greater magic still: the individuality of his tone," wrote Walter Legge. From the moment he first became known internationally, no one has disputed that Dennis Brain attained an unrivalled excellence, and he remains a model for those who have followed him. His playing convinced the finest conductors of the day (Beecham, Sawallisch, Stokowski, Sargent, Karajan) and inspired the many composers who dedicated works to him (Britten, Arnold, Hindemith, Jacob, Berkeley, Poulenc). "His only interest in life outside music was his family and motor cars," Legge wrote; tragically, he was killed in a car accident on 1 September 1957. This collection brings together all of his recordings for the former EMI, made between 1938 and 1957, as soloist, chamber musician and leading member of chamber orchestras. Notable appearances in opera and elsewhere have been added, as has music composed with him in mind. Previously unissued material and first releases on CD are also included. All the material here comes from the sole authorised sources, made from the original masters, and uses the most recent remasterings.
