The George Coleman Quintet

Description:

<<George Coleman, who worked for Miles Davis, Elvin Jones and others, performed in his mid-30s in Baltimore in 1971. The oldest recorded performance of George Coleman as a leader is now available on Reel to Real, a new excavation of a live performance George Coleman gave with his quintet at a club in Baltimore. The members include trumpeter Danny Moore, who played with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra; pianist Al Daly, who sadly passed away in 1984; bassist Larry Ridley, who has come to Japan many times as a sideman, including a visit to Japan with the Thelonious Monk Quartet in 1970; and guitarist Geoff Gehry. With these four players, Coleman's playing is much more powerful and dynamic than when he was a member of the Miles Davis Quintet (1963-64). Coleman's playing is much more powerful and dynamic than when he was with the Miles Davis Quintet (1963-64).And what makes this find so valuable is that, so far, this is the earliest recording with George Coleman as leader. On Green Dolphin Street," recorded in Holland during a solo visit to Europe in April 1974, was Coleman's first leader album, and "Big George" (Catalyst) (also with Danny Moore), recorded in November 1977, is considered the first official studio recording. Danny Moore also joined the band), recorded in November 1977. The live performance in Baltimore, recorded on May 23, 1971, is a few years earlier than the above two albums, but it is already a mature performance.Born in Memphis in 1935, Coleman honed his craft with fellow Memphians Booker Little, Phineas Newborn, Jr. After making his recording debut in 1957 with Lee Morgan's Blue Note album "CityLights," Coleman worked with Max Roach, Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, and others, but since the mid-1970s he has continued to lead his own groups, and at the age of 85 is still very active. Coleman's first live performance as a leader includes five songs. Starting with John Lewis' "Afternoon In Paris," two Clifford Brown numbers, and two standard numbers, the contrast between the extremely fast tempo of "I Got Rhythm" and the unforgettable ballad "Body And Soul" is brilliant. The contrast between the extremely fast tempo "I Got Rhythm" and the unforgettable ballad "Body And Soul" is vivid.
