One of Bruckner's (1824-1896) masterpieces, "Symphony No. 9" was the last symphony he worked on. 1887, right after he completed No. 8, he started to compose it, but his writing did not progress well, and it was not until five years later, after the premiere of No. 8 in 1892, that he began to feel enthusiastic. However, by then his illness had progressed, and in 1894 he had completed the first three movements and was working on the fourth movement, but in the end it was left unfinished. It is said that Bruckner said that he wanted the Te Deum to be played instead of the last movement if the work was not completed. Although this work is often performed in a supplemented and completed version these days, Cornelius Meister closes the piece with only three movements in a relaxed manner. The alternative is the Mass No. 3, composed around 1867. It is a large work with a structure like a "symphony with song" in a sense, filled with a thick sound and a pious spirit. It is worth mentioning not only the flowing music that Cornelius spins out, but also the excellence of the soloists. Naxos Japan
