[Unreleased Tracks from Elemental Music] Dexter Gordon, 1977 Paris/Château-Valon A passionate performance brimming with musicality! Featuring Jimmy Heath’s classic “Gingerbread Boy”—a track running over 37 minutes—and numerous other performances that showcase his peak form at the time, these recordings are finally seeing the light of day! Dexter Gordon had been performing with a quartet featuring George Cables, Rufus Reed, and Eddie Graden since 1977. With this group, he recorded *Manhattan Symphony* for Columbia in 1978, and *Nights at the Keystone* for Blue Note. This new release is a two-disc set capturing their performance at the 1978 Jazz Festival in Château-Valon, France, where they appeared with the same quartet. As usual, Dexter’s MC—introducing the songs in his characteristic unhurried, unassuming style—leads into the passionate performances. Though the repertoire is familiar, fresh phrases flow abundantly from Dexter’s tenor saxophone, revealing just how in top form he was at the time. Jimmy Heath’s classic “Gingerbread Boy” is performed for over 37 minutes. After this passionate rendition, as the program moves toward the closing announcement, Dexter’s original composition “Long Tall Dexter” is played as the closing theme.
