Erasing the presence of the hammer and letting the piano sing—master pianist Bertrand Chamayou immerses himself deeply in these 48 “diaries” without lyrics, evoking memories as enduring as old photographs in this sublime complete recording of *Songs Without Words*. “Mendelssohn’s *Song Without Words* is famous, but fewer than 10 of the 48 pieces are ever performed in concert,” says Bertrand Chamayou. Having earned high acclaim for his recordings of Messiaen and John Cage, he has now poured his keen imagination into this two-CD set—a collection of miniatures that has continued to captivate audiences for nearly 200 years, yet for which complete recordings by leading pianists remain relatively scarce. “This work is like a diary that the composer wrote intermittently over a period of 16 years, from 1829 to 1845,” says Chamayou. Although it does not deal with extreme emotions, its expressive and technical demands are diverse. Pieces such as the “Venetian Barcarolle,” the “Spinning Song,” and the most famous “Spring Song” have long been popular even among amateur musicians. Mendelssohn himself devised the concept of the “song without words.” Challenging the conventional wisdom that “music is ambiguous, while words are more certain,” he wrote in a letter, “True music is far superior to words, which are prone to misunderstanding, and it fills the soul.” Shama-Yu points out that Mendelssohn adapted the “lied” (song) form—in which he creates his own unique universe in a matter of minutes—for the piano. He discusses the difficulty of “making the piano sing and creating the illusion that the hammers have vanished,” explaining that precisely because the way sound is produced differs from the human voice, it is necessary to carefully craft the agogics (changes in tempo) and the details of phrasing. Precisely because there are no lyrics, by striving to breathe like a singer, the pianist can embark on a journey into a deeper, more introspective world. For him, the companion on this journey is “nostalgia.” “Turning the pages of *Song Without Words* feels like opening an old trunk filled with faded family photos and mementos, and immersing myself in the stories that each photograph brings back to life,” he says.
