A rising star on the viola, David Aaron Carpenter, born in 1986 in New York, is one of the hottest young viola players of today, winning the 2006 Naumburg Viola Competition and performing in some of the most prestigious concert halls in America. She studied under Pinkus Zuckerman and Yuri Bashmet. He has been praised by Eschenbach as "a compelling and charismatic performer," and his performances with him have been highly acclaimed around the world. He has released four albums on the Ondine label, and this new Warner album is Piazzolla's "The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. There have been violin and cello versions of this piece, but the viola's unique tone and rhythms, which make the most of the viola's mid-range, are captivating.The second piece, "Four Seasons in Manhattan" by Alexei Shaw (1970-), is not contemporary music, but a beautiful piece in the style of Grieg's "Holberg Suite". The viola and string ensemble seem to be blowing a fresh breeze. And in Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons," the viola is played with an amazing technique of such superb virtuosity that it almost seems to be a violin.
