Description:

Berlioz is considered by many to be the innovator of the symphony in 19th century France. As a young man, Berlioz witnessed Beethoven's symphonies performed by the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts de la Conservatoire de Paris, and he sought to elevate them to the sublime by incorporating operatic elements into symphonic works. He had previously created the "title symphony," or "Symphonie fantastique" and "Harold in Italia," and "Romeo and Juliet," which mobilizes the expressive power of the voices and the huge orchestra, is a dramatic symphony that musicalizes Shakespeare's tragedy and goes far beyond the usual conception of a symphony. It is a work that goes far beyond the usual conception of a symphony. This recording was made live at Davis Symphony Hall, San Francisco, June 28-July 1, 2017. Previously, Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) had recorded Berlioz's large-scale "symphony" twice (RCA and SFS) with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in the Symphonie fantastique, but this is the first recording of the complete "Romeo and Juliet" in full.Grammy Award-winning singer Sasha Cook, who came to Japan in July 2018 with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra to sing in "Elgar: The Dream of Gerontius"; Nicolas Pang, who joined the Bach Collegium Japan in 2016 for "Handel: Messiah" and "Bach: Secular Cantatas"; and Luca Pisaroni, who sang in "Beethoven:Fidelio," and other soloists. Each is a singer who has performed with MTT many times, and under the direction of Ragnar Boleyn, who is celebrating his 10th anniversary as director of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, the performance is rich and passionate. He said, "This vivid music, the scenes, the passionate finale . It is an enormous and complex work that spans a wide range of emotions. The inspiration and transformative power of the love contained here is fully expressed by the wonderful singers, choir, and orchestra." Highly acclaimed performance. Warner Music Japan
