Description:

Verdi’s (1813–1901) *La Traviata* is one of the most popular productions at the Opera House. With its classic themes—a romance across social classes and a heroine suffering from an incurable illness—interwoven with dreamlike, beautiful melodies, it is a masterpiece among masterpieces. Violetta, a courtesan who is not even allowed to seek true love, meets the innocent young man Alfredo. She gives up her glamorous life to live a secluded existence with him in the countryside, but when Alfredo’s father arrives, he refuses to allow it and demands that Violetta step aside, citing “Alfredo’s sister’s upcoming wedding” as the reason. “For the sake of the one I love,” Violetta gracefully steps aside. The misunderstanding that arises here is resolved in the final act, but by then it is already too late… In the original libretto, Alfredo did not visit her bedside at the moment of her death, but Piave grants these tragic lovers one last tender moment together… The beauty of that fleeting instant once again moves the audience to tears. The production was directed by Hugo de Ana, an authority on Italian opera. By creating a lavish set on the vast stage of the Arena di Verona and directing the singers with masterful precision, he crafted an ideal production of *La Traviata*. Violetta is sung by the Albanian-born soprano Elmonela Jaho, who has recently been attracting attention. She is a young artist who aspired to be a singer from a young age, studied in Italy, and has won numerous competitions. She specializes in works by Verdi and Puccini and has sung the role of Violetta at theaters across the country; in this production, too, no one will be able to resist her alluring presence as she sings “Ah, is that the man?—From flower to flower,” shedding her dazzling costume. This marks her debut at the Arena di Verona alongside Demuro, who sings Alfredo. Julian Kovatchev’s conducting, with its subtle darkness, undoubtedly makes this production a truly exceptional one.
