After studying English literature at the University of Cambridge, Manro spent some time in South America. It was there that he encountered indigenous wind instruments and became deeply captivated by them. Already a master recorder player since his student days, Manro expanded his specialization to early music in the 1960s and founded the London Early Music Consort in 1967. As you know, this ensemble brought together artists who would go on to lead the British early music scene, including James Bowman, Oliver Brox, Christopher Hogwood, and James Tyler. It is widely believed that Manro’s success in nurturing such a distinguished succession of successors was largely due to the passion he radiated to those around him and his skill in devising meticulous research plans. Manro was a genius not only as an artist and scholar, but also as an educator. "The Art of the Recorder" is a comprehensive overview of recorder music by historical period, featuring recordings of the highest musical standard, all completed by Manro himself, who even wrote the fascinating liner notes (included in this release). It is a superhuman achievement that could only be accomplished by someone with multifaceted talents akin to those of da Vinci. The bonus track “Medieval Instruments” is taken from the two-LP set of the same name, originally produced as audio material for Manro’s book *Medieval and Renaissance Instruments*, published by Oxford University Press in 1976; the “Renaissance” section is included on SBT1250 and 1251. In May 1976, the radio reported Manro’s death (it is said that the fact it was a suicide was kept under wraps for quite some time). Bartlett, who wrote the liner notes for the “Medieval Instruments” section, heard the news while at the library working on a project Manroe had commissioned him to do. Manroe had been advancing all his projects according to a meticulously calculated plan. Realizing he did not have enough time left to complete the work, he likely entrusted it to a friend three days before his death. David Manroe was not only blessed with rare natural talent but remained a consummate professional in every respect until the very end.
