Description:

Nézet-Séguin's verses explode, and he performs with his hometown orchestra! Sibelius sings with suppleness and sometimes with passion. Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who has been the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Metropolitan Orchestra of Montreal since 2000, recorded his second series of Sibelius symphonies with his hometown orchestra. Following the first recording of Symphony No. 1 (ACD2-2452), this release features Symphonies Nos. 3 and 4. No. 3 is the turning point in Sibelius' shift to smaller symphonies. The music is bold and experimental in a sense, with a simple melody, thin harmony, and the pursuit of an interesting sound created by a minimal layering of instruments. Nézet-Séguin captures the elements of the music precisely, carefully arranging them while playing sympathetically and sometimes enthusiastically. She sings with supple breathing. The strings are richly expressive, from soft, soft notes to hard, hard notes. The fourth symphony has a more refined writing style, but it is also a symphony overshadowed by a gloomy darkness, symmetrical to the openness of the third symphony. In the final movement, a bad balance of minor and major tones coexists. Nézet-Séguin captures the music spontaneously and naturally, and by trusting the score and letting it sound as it does, she vividly portrays the dull, shiny sound that Sibelius was aiming for. The sense of unity with the orchestra is excellent, and it is clear that the conductor's intentions are clearly conveyed. King International
