Cutting-edge composer-cellist's latest work, which bears his own name Scottish-born Peter Gregson is releasing a new album titled after himself. Gregson is a cellist and composer who continues to push the envelope, having been described by The New Yorker as "working at the cutting edge of the new music scene. The album features nine wordless contemporary compositions for cello and synthesizer. Gregson himself says that this is "the closest I've ever come to the sounds I hear in my head," and it is a confident self-expression by one musician whose imagination has reached its zenith. Recorded at Real World Studios, founded by Peter Gabriel, Gregson achieved his ideal sound by running the cello through his own synthesizer and utilizing every sound the cello could produce. The result is a collection of poetic and atmospheric pieces that definitively express Gregson's artistry. The order of the pieces reflects the actual order in which they were composed and recorded. Furthermore, each piece relates to the form that the next piece will take.For example, the dreamy "Share," which Gregson sees as a natural opening track, sets the stage for the percussive "Prism." The active "Prism" then leads into the more dense and introspective "Ritual," which prompts the uplifting rhapsody of "Constellation" that follows. Says Gregson, "It's always fun to experiment with different song orders for an album, but this time everything seemed as simple and appropriate as possible." Since 2010, Gregson has released six solo albums for Deutsche Grammophon, including J.S. Bach: Suite for Unaccompanied Cello (2018), Patina (2021), and Quartets 3 & 4 (2022).
