Period performances of good works by Hummel, Ries, and Schubert. Romanticism had diverse aspects. Mozart's spirit pervaded the world of music, and Beethoven's music became the benchmark for many Romantic composers, passed on directly by Mozart's pupil Hummel and Beethoven's pupil Ries. European newspapers praised the "unbridled romanticism" of Ries, considered Schumann's forerunner, while Hummel, a virtuoso piano player, was the most famous pianist in the world at the time, and the young Liszt was enamored of his music. Schubert, by contrast, was the embodiment of personal expression in the Romantic era, playing only in private settings and showing no interest in technique, despite being an outstanding pianist. Here, the Dutch period instrument ensemble "Van Swieten Society" portrays the individuality of each piece, and we enjoy the sounds of the time. The booklet (8 pages, in English) includes commentary by Aalto and others.
