Rare recordings—including the first-ever CD release of recordings from the British Library’s collection—are remastered and reissued as a 2-CD set! “APR,” known for its reissues of high-quality historical piano recordings, is launching a new series focusing on Polish pianists. Karol Siretel (1898–1933) was a Polish pianist. A student of Egon Petri, he was destined to become one of the leading virtuosos of the first half of the 20th century, but he died prematurely at the age of 34 before achieving international success—a true “phantom” pianist. More than 90 years after his death, with virtually no systematic efforts made to reevaluate his recorded legacy, he has become a figure known only to a select few today. This album allows you to savor his astonishing performances through these rare recordings. His debut recording from November 1923, a mechanical recording of a paraphrase of Michawowski’s “Waltz of the Little Dog,” is extremely rare. Furthermore, his performances of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 and three sonatas are believed to be the first electrical recordings of these works. It is also fascinating that he uses Anton Rubinstein’s cadenza in the concerto. While his ability to structure large-scale works is impressive, his brilliant technique—demonstrated in the dazzling paraphrases of Strauss’s waltzes (particularly “A Artist’s Life”) arranged by Grünfeld and himself—is also a highlight. Among the tracks, Schubert/Liszt’s “Serenade,” the paraphrase of Michawowski’s “Puppy Waltz,” and “Viennese Temperament” (arranged by Siretel; marked with ** in the track list) are the first-ever reissues of SP records held in the British Library’s collection. The remaining tracks were digitized under license from Pavilion Records, the rights holder to the original recordings, which were previously released by Pearl. Andrew Halifax used the latest technology to correct pitch and rotational irregularities, restoring the sound as closely as possible to the original, thereby bringing the piano playing of this ill-fated, legendary virtuoso back to life.
