Description:

The final recordings by two great masters: Oistrakh and Richter. Presented for the first time on a single CD in the original track order from the initial release! The 1972 recording “Last Recordings,” which won the 1975 Record Academy Award, is now available on SACD for the first time! Mastered using analog master tapes from the Victor Archives with state-of-the-art technology! Includes a new foreword and commentary by Yoshiko Ikuma. A state-of-the-art reissue supervised by Tomoo Nojima—the producer who worked extensively with Richter at the time—in pursuit of the original sound. “The music created by Oistrakh and Richter is the cry from the hearts of great human beings who desperately sought the meaning of life, persevered, and made life shine.” —From the new foreword by Yoshiko Ikuma Under the supervision of Tomio Nojima, the director at the time, the latest mastering was performed at Victor FLAIR Mastering Works, starting with a complete review of the power supply and cabling. The goal was to create a detailed sound that makes Richter’s expressiveness clearer and his meticulous technique more evident. Richters’ breathtaking performances fill us with an indescribable excitement. This SACD reissue of Richters’ recordings features source material for which Victor holds the master recordings or distribution rights. The compilation adheres closely to the original recording locations and sequence, bringing together tracks from various albums. Although Richter left behind numerous recordings—including live performances—across various labels, he appears to have been quite selective regarding their release. It appears there are many recordings that, although made, were never actually released because he was not satisfied with his performance; according to the aforementioned Mr. Tomio Nojima, there are many unreleased recordings and takes even among those recorded at Victor. It is said that he always maintained a high level of dedication and awareness, sometimes even starting a performance from the very beginning again for re-recording even after a live concert had ended. He is widely recognized as a perfectionist, and isn’t it precisely this—overwhelming listeners with exceptionally polished performances delivered with rare concentration and intensity—that defines Richter? His attitude of pursuing perfection until he was satisfied is also an indispensable element when discussing Richter. The surviving recordings all bring to life a pianism that only Richter could achieve, and each one is sure to satisfy the listener. (1/3)
