In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich's death, a selection of masterpieces from film music recorded on NAXOS/MARCO POLO. The film industry, which grew significantly in the 20th century, had a tremendous impact on the music world as well. It is said that Shostakovich wrote music for around 35 films, and concert suites were created from about 10 of them, which are still popular in concerts today. As a young man he worked as a pianist in silent movie theaters, where he honed his sensitivity to film music through improvisation and arrangement. His early works have experimental elements, and his distinctive irony in his waltzes and polkas is clearly evident in his individuality. The works in this box set are among the most enjoyable, as they trace Shostakovich's various compositional techniques. This box set contains Shostakovich's film music from the 1920s to 1964. The collection includes "New Babylon," Shostakovich's first film score, "Woman Alone," which includes a piece that makes effective use of the theremin, and "Horsefly," which features a beautiful romance melody in a hard-boiled story.Enjoy the score by Mark Fitz-Gerald, who restored the score, Adriano, who has recorded many film scores for the MARCO POLO label, and Dmitri Yablonsky, who specializes in Russian music, conducting. *A 64-page booklet (English only) is included.
