The second collection of Mendelssohn's string quartets includes No. 4, written in the period of stability immediately after Felix's marriage and full of both passion and elegance; the only string quartet by his sister Fanny, with its technical and unconventional sense of structure and unique charm; and No. 6, full of anguish and turmoil, perhaps reflecting Felix's mental state while he was still recovering from the shock of Fanny's death. The soft and lively gut strings are a perfect match for the quartet's music.
