[The complete Rachmaninoff symphonies by Macelaru and the handpicked WDR Symphony Orchestra in one collection. Born in Romania in 1980, Cristian Macelaru is currently making great strides in Europe, making his Deutsche Grammophon debut in 2024 with the Enescu, which he conducted with the Orchestre National de France. His fourth LINN release with the Cologne WDR Symphony Orchestra, of which he is principal conductor (the third was the Brahms concerto with Trpceski), is a powerful release of all of Rachmaninoff's numbered symphonies in a single cycle. The third volume, the fourth, features Rachmaninoff's most famous work, No. 2, which was a great success after its premiere and remains one of Rachmaninoff's masterpieces to this day, and No. 3, which was composed in his later years after leaving Russia. The third piece, composed in his later years away from Russia, is included in this recording. The rarely performed "Fantasia on a Gypsy Theme" is a youthful work from the same period as Symphony No. 1, and "Island of Death" is also included, which was composed during the period of Rachmaninoff's success with Symphony No. 2.Macerlal sings these works, each unique in its own way while colored by beautiful melodies and lively rhythms typical of Rachmaninoff, with a great deal of deep empathy.
