The theorbo, a type of large lute developed as a bass instrument, also developed as a solo instrument in the 17th century. Robert de Vizier, one of its most famous composers and a guitarist of rare talent, was the last master of the lute at a time when the flourishing history of lute music in France was coming to an end. Thibault Roussel, who is widely active in France, has produced this album together with three of his most talented colleagues, and has included vocal pieces by other composers from the period before and after de Vizee's death. The album features a selection of works by other composers from the period around the time of de Wizet's death, including vocal works by other composers. The core of the program consists of five suites from the famous Vaudry de Sesnais manuscript (begun in 1699), the source of his works, which are also compared with manuscripts in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris (Res 1106, Res F 1820) and in the archives of Agen, between Bordeaux and Toulouse. are performed with comparative reference to theThe program also features the exceptional sound of singer Doviller and viol player Lignol, who are also active as soloists.
