Guilain, Jean-adam (c.1680-1739)
Description:
The world of French organ music, which has a unique history that differs from that of Germany and Italy. Its performance tradition is deeply involved in the development of the country's musical language, and the Coupland family and other composers known for their clavecin (harpsichord) music were all trained as organists. The art of the French Baroque organ also had an international influence, as evidenced by the interest of the German-speaking organ virtuoso Bach, and French composers of the 19th century such as Saint-Saens and Vidor were quick to rediscover old music. The organists of the symphonic school and beyond also learned much from their mastery of the art. Guillain, an organist and composer of the same generation as Bach, came to France from German-speaking countries in 1702, and probably studied under the great master Marchand of the older generation. The historical instrument was restored to its 18th-century state at the end of the 20th century, and the musical world of the organ was deciphered by André Izoard (1935-2016), a master organist in the tradition of French organ playing dating back to Vidor and Dupré. ).This is a masterful performance that fully conveys the charm of the French Baroque style of organ music, in which the pipes are used differently for each piece and voice part, making the most of the different tones and unique rhythms, while interweaving the singing of prayer verses with the original form of the work, which was intended for use in worship. It is a very welcome return to the catalog of this highly acclaimed recording, which was released immediately after the restoration of the instrument. Naxos Japan
