Description:

This album features a collection of Takashi Yoshimatsu’s representative piano pieces for the left hand—composed for his close friend Izumi Tateno—performed by Yumiko Oshima-Ryan, who is based in the United States. Tateno, who has been based in Helsinki since 1964, collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage at the end of a concert in January 2001, leaving her with paralysis on the right side of her body; however, she resolved to resume her performing career with a repertoire for her left hand. Composers who admired Tateno began sending her new works one after another. Among these, the works by Takashi Yoshimatsu—who deeply admires the Finnish composer Sibelius—have gained popularity for their clear sound and accessible musical ideas. “Tapioola Fantasies” depicts scenes from the realm of Tapio, the god of the forest in Finnish mythology, while “Ainola Lyric Pieces” was inspired by the mountain cottage where Sibelius spent the latter part of his life. Both are lyrical and beautiful works. The *Gauche Dance Suite*, named after the French word for “left hand,” is a delightfully genre-bending work characteristic of Yoshimatsu. Yumiko Oshima-Ryan was born in Tokyo. She studied at Toho Gakuen and earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Since 1995, she has incorporated Japanese contemporary works into her repertoire and has performed in Tokyo, Toronto, San Juan, and other cities. She serves as professor of piano at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota. Regarding these works, she states, “Although they were inspired by images of nature—such as wind, water, light, birds, and Tapio, the god of the forest—because this music was written for Mr. Tateno when he was stricken with illness, it awakens the strength to face and overcome adversity. Every time I play these pieces, I am reminded of the greatness of music’s power to touch the human soul,” she says. *The Japanese edition includes a Japanese liner note by Yumiko Ryan Oshima.
