In 1877, Tchaikovsky wrote to his patroness Mrs. Meck, "I often go to worship, and in my opinion the St. John Chrysostomus (officially called the "Ioan Eucharistic Rite") is one of the greatest works of art. At the time, Tchaikovsky was revising the church music of his predecessor Bortniansky and was also impressed by his work. However, the Imperial Church prohibited the composition and singing of new Orthodox chants at this time, and when Tchaikovsky published the piece, he faced fierce opposition from the Church, and the dispute between the publisher and the Church became so contentious that the matter was taken to court. Tchaikovsky eventually won the case in court, but the first performance took place earlier, in June 1879, much to Tchaikovsky's delight.
