Description:

Mengelberg's last session recording has a surprisingly classical neatness. This is a must-listen for historical music fans! ......Now, about the performance itself, I got the impression that Schubert's performance had a surprisingly classical neatness. This is especially true of "The Great". Mengelberg is often thought of as the "last dinosaur" of the Romantic school of performance, with arbitrary slow and fast dynamics, but here he moves the music forward briskly and without delay. The performance is quite different from the same piece recorded in 1942 by the BPO under Furtwängler, which swells and explodes violently, as well as from Kempen's session recording with the same orchestra made half a year later. The difference between Kempen's performance and the BPO's is particularly interesting because the conditions are similar. Kempen's performance is much more romantic, letting the phrases breathe deeply, and emphasizing the drama of the music with a wide range of slow and fast movements.Kempen, a Dutchman who moved to Germany early in his career, and who has built his career from violinist to conductor there, has a sludgy romanticism in his playing that he shares with Furtwängler. In comparison, Mengelberg's playing is more in-tempo and rhythmic. The beauty of the silky tone of the strings, which is unique to the Concertgebouw, is more clearly audible and audible. This performance made me pay attention to the classical element of Mengelberg's music. (Comment courtesy of Kotaro Yamazaki, King International)
