Toscanini’s 1939 Beethoven Cycle A complete reissue from the Toscanini Society’s “unplayed” LP!! The legendary pairing of Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra needs no introduction—this is the Beethoven Cycle (held as the Beethoven Festival) from October through December 1939. This marked their third season together, a period of perfect harmony, and the NBC Symphony Orchestra’s masterful artistry—responding swiftly as the maestro’s very hands and feet—is a must-hear. Toscanini, just over 70 years old, was brimming with energy and stamina. He sings his heart out, inspiring the orchestra. We have fully reissued this legendary performance from the original, unplayed 7-LP set released by the Toscanini Society. Furthermore, we discovered an unplayed LP of the overture collection and have paired it with this set. Although Studio 8H, where the performance took place, is known for its stark acoustics with virtually no reverberation, listening to this LP reveals a surprisingly mellow sound, with the orchestra’s tone exhibiting a European—or rather, understated—character. The stable, rich depth of sound is something unique to analog. While there have been many previous releases—and the M&A reissue was also excellent—the sound on those, to put it bluntly, felt a bit sharp; therefore, we strongly encourage you to give this release a listen as well. The Toscanini Society release includes a newsletter packed with contemporary testimonies and articles from that era; thanks to the generosity of a former member, Japanese translations of these are included here. Furthermore, it includes an original article by the up-and-coming journalist Nestor Castiglione titled “Feeling the Spirit: Toscanini’s 1939 Beethoven Cycle for NBC.” Muse Trading
