The cadenza and entrance for No. 20 are based on an improvisation by Robert Levin on the recording with Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music (L’Oiseau-Lyre, 1997) (with Levin’s permission), while the cadenza in the third movement of No. 5 is based on Malcolm Bilson’s improvisation on the recording he made with the English Baroque Soloists conducted by Gardiner (ArchivProduktion, 1987) (with Bilson’s permission). Bezaidenhout’s artistry shines through in the most exquisite way; his performance of the Concerto in D minor is truly one-of-a-kind, combining dramatic expression with an underlying sense of tenderness.
