Unfortunately, Gould's complete Beethoven/piano sonata cycle was never completed, but all the works he would have wanted to record may have been recorded. The "Funeral" and "Fantasy" sonatas included here are problematic works that have been described as heretical, but the performances break with conventional wisdom in a way that is typical of Gould, and yet are compelling and convincing without ever breaking the mold. Far from tradition and style, it can be said that Gould's innocent heart gave shape to this work. (C)RS
