Köstick, who is known throughout Europe as “Dr. Beethoven” and has earned high acclaim—including an Echo Award—presents four early works on this album, including the legendary “Pathétique.” Be amazed by the contrast between the opening of the first movement of No. 5 in C minor—which brims with explosive energy—and the almost excessively lyrical second movement. And that sense of wonder continues right through to the end of the album: the gentle No. 6, and the seemingly racing No. 7. The energy surging throughout is on the verge of exploding. The singing quality of the “Pathétique,” performed with such ease, is simply irresistible (the beauty of the second movement, with its exquisite dynamics and tempo, is unparalleled). Of course, all pieces have been studied and performed based on Beethoven’s autograph scores. Korsik’s Beethoven may lack flashiness, but it is rich in character.
