Sergei Diaghilev of the American conductor Kazim Abdullah's "Daphnis and Chloe" "Ballets Russes (Diaghilev Ballet)" commissioned Ravel in 1910 to compose ballet music based on Longos' ancient novel "The Story of the Pastoral Lesbos about Daphnis and Chloe". A love story written by Longos in ancient Greece. Set on an island with an idyllic scene in the Aegean Sea, the story of a boy and a girl in love is lyrically depicted, intertwined with various anecdotes. The piece is composed in three parts, with the third part frequently performed in concert as the "Second Suite" on its own.
