Behm in His Prime: Beethoven with the RIAS Symphony Orchestra The Symphony No. 4 from a 1952 studio recording and the live performance of the Piano Concerto No. 4 with Backhaus have also been reissued. Beethoven conducted by the master Böhm (1894–1981) with the RIAS Symphony Orchestra during his prime in the 1950s. The Symphony No. 4 from 1952, recorded when Böhm was 57, is considered one of the earliest Beethoven recordings he made after World War II. When it comes to Böhm’s Beethoven, audite features live recordings from the 1970s, including Symphony No. 2, No. 3 “Eroica,” and No. 7 with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra—recordings that allow one to truly appreciate the brilliance of Böhm at the height of his energy. Although the time period differs, here too, the musical phrasing—which brims with a sense of speed far beyond the actual tempo—is particularly striking. On the other hand, the Piano Concerto No. 4, performed with Backhaus, is the same performance that was once released by TAHRA (now out of print). Backhaus, at age 66, delivers a pianism that is far from subdued—it is robust, lucid, and truly electrifying.
