Description:
For many years, Takuro Okada has been asking a quiet question. "As a Japanese musician, how can I respect African-American music without simply borrowing from it?" --This quest has shaped his new album, "Konoma. Okada, a Tokyo-based guitarist/producer/bandleader, has lived with this struggle since childhood. While growing up drawn to blues, jazz, and funk records, he was confronted with the weight of history etched in them and pondered his own origins as a Japanese born and raised in Japan and his connection to these musical genres. He was introduced to "Afro-mingei" at an exhibition by artist Theaster Gates. Gates connected the aesthetics of black art with the Japanese mingei movement, showing that both cultures are rooted in the spirit of "resistance. Just as the phrase "Black is Beautiful" symbolized resistance to racism, the Mingei movement was born to preserve the beauty of the everyday that was disappearing due to industrialization. The resonance of these two spirits became Okada's compass for "Konoma. This work is an earful of reverberations that ring across the boundaries of culture and time. Konoma" contains six originals and two covers. Each song was shaped in the course of this "dialogue. The graceful, languid "Portrait of Yanagi" drifts like a standard from another era in a hazy memory, while the short, dense "Galaxy" combines the electric organ experiments of late Sun Ra, the divisive thrust of an early Flying Lotus beat tape, and the shadowy influence of trip-hop. The cover selection also evokes Okada's electric organ experiments of late Sun Ra, the divisive thrust of early Flying Lotus beat tapes, and the shadowy atmosphere of trip-hop. The cover selections also vividly mirror Okada's thought and dialogue. Jan Garbarek's "Nefertite," with its chilling beauty that epitomizes 1970s ECM, reconstructs a time when European musicians were searching for their own identity in jazz. Hiromasa Suzuki's "Love," on the other hand, evokes the electric heat of the 1970s Japanese jazz scene. At the time, musicians fused psychedelic, funk, and folk to create a unique "local dialect. Through both, "Konoma" continues the lineage of artists who have "twisted" borrowed forms into new forms of expression. With "Konoma," a co-release between ISC Hi-Fi Selects and Temporal Drift, Takuro Okada presents his most personal and expansive expression to date. It is a meditation on connections, influences, and the beauty that lives on across cultures.
