Description:

The latest in BBE Music's J Jazz Masterclass Series! The world premiere reissue of "Reminiscent Suite," a fantastic album by Mal Waldron of Left Alone fame, released only on the Japanese Victor label at the time of his session with Terumasa Hino in 1973, featuring American pianist Mal Waldron and Japanese trumpet player Terumasa Hino. Reminiscent Suite" was released on the famous Victor label in 1973 and is one of the Japan-only albums that Waldron recorded and released over a period of more than 30 years, most of which have never been released outside of Japan. Reminiscent Suite" consists of two extended tracks, both of which occupy a side each: the title track on side A was written by Waldron and is a dark, brooding, heavy groove typical of his sound in the early 70s; the B-side "Black Forest was written by Hino, and is a vibrant, energetic piece that layers dense percussion with Hino's signature trumpet tone. Mal Waldron worked extensively with the Prestidge label in the early 1950s, along with such luminaries as Gene Ammons, Jackie McLean, and Charles Mingus. Most famously, he worked with Billie Holiday before leaving the U.S. in the mid-1960s and relocating to Europe, establishing himself as a major player in many countries, including France, Italy, and Germany, where he built a home in Munich. In 1969, Waldron joined two major European He recorded his first releases on the jazz labels ECM and Enja, and toured Japan for the first time in 1970. Waldron immediately fell in love with Japan and spent the next three decades touring and recording for numerous labels. Terumasa Hino is one of the masters of modern jazz in postwar Japan, having emerged in the mid-1960s with Hideto Shiraki, Sadao Watanabe, and others, Hino emerged as one of the leading figures of the New Jazz Generation, which changed the direction of jazz in Japan. He explored a more open, freer, improvisational sound, mixing elements of psychedelic and rock with freeform and post-bop jazz. Hino recorded for the major jazz labels of the time, including Columbia, Three Blind Mice, and East Wind, and in the mid-1970s he relocated to the U.S. and worked with some of the leading musicians of the New York fusion scene, including Larry Coryell, Mutme, Al Foster, and Dave Liebman. He has been in contact with many of the leading musicians of the New York fusion scene, including Larry Coryell, Mutume, Al Foster and Dave Liebman. In the early 80s, Hino's jazz-funk tracks became a dance floor smash on the UK jazz dance scene. Joining Waldron and Hino in the "Reminicient Suite" was a band composed of some of the best Japanese jazzmen of the time: Takeo Uematsu on saxophone, Motohiko Hino, Terumasa's brother on drums, and legendary bass master Isao Suzuki. Together, they deliver one of the best albums of the era, a richly articulate and dynamic session that embodies the best of the Japanese jazz scene of the early 1970s.
