Description:
Mike Clark, the drummer behind the funk side of Herbie Hancock's music, plays some of his favorite Hancock tunes in a trio setting. Hancock's favorite Hancock compositions in a trio configuration. Hancock had originally hired Herbie Mason to play drums, but Paul Jackson, who had become a member earlier, recommended Mike Clark to the group, and the Headhunters were born. This was the beginning of Mike Clark's full-fledged involvement in the world of jazz, and he soon became fascinated with the allure of acoustic jazz. Although Clark tended to emphasize the funk aspect of the music, what he appreciated most was the sophisticated, contemporary sound that Hancock recorded at Blue Note in the 1960s. This ambitious work is an attempt at a "boss" piece as a piano trio with Leon Lee Dorsey (bass) and John Davis (piano), longtime collaborators and chosen as members because they were open to any stylistic challenge and never missed a swing.
