Description:

ANYYOUNGMECHANIC is a five-piece contemporary folk band from Adelaide, Australia. Aiming to create "folk music for the modern age," this highly anticipated band—known for their unique sound that combines cinematic grandeur with the intimacy of chamber music—has released their long-awaited debut album, *THEMODERNSHOISRUININGTHEFOOT*, on vinyl LP! ANYYOUNGMECHANIC is a five-piece contemporary folk band from Adelaide, Australia. Taking their name from a line in the song “Hooray For Hollywood”—which was memorably featured in Robert Altman’s film *The Long Goodbye*—they are a band gaining attention for their unique sound that combines cinematic grandeur with the intimacy of chamber music, all while aiming to create “folk music for the modern age.” All five members of ANYYOUNGMECHANIC studied everything from classical to contemporary music at the Elder Conservatorium of Music in Adelaide. The band’s origins lie in the songwriting of frontman Sam Wilson and drummer and backing vocalist Jakin Mee. In 2023, violinist and multi-instrumentalist Thea Martin, double bassist Alan McBean, and guitarist and banjoist Luca Kilgariff-Johnson joined the group, solidifying their current identity. After forming, they reportedly crammed massive instruments like the double bass into a cramped bedroom at Jakin’s parents’ house, spending three months in intensive rehearsals to solidify the band’s unity and sound. “We’re trying to make folk music for ‘now,’” says frontman Sam Wilson. “We want to turn it on its head in new, sometimes eerie ways. We just don’t want to repeat the past. It’s no fun making the same thing over and over. That’s why we’re exploring a contemporary edge.” True to his word, their debut album, *THEMODERNSHOEISRUININGTHEFOOT*, is a work that fuses the universal appeal of folk music with musical versatility that transcends genre boundaries and a sharp vision.
