Description:

A collection of two Mahler and five Webern works on two discs, recorded in the late 70's at the height of the analog era. New reissue from the original ETERNA analog tapes in Japan. Excellent recording. Mahler's No.1 is the world's first SACD release! Mastered only in the analog domain and converted directly to DSD! The 10th SACD hybridization of the latest reissue project of ETERNA's original analog tapes in Japan, Herbert Kögel (1920.7.29-90.11.20) left two Mahler symphonies and all five Webern works for ETERNA, for a total of three albums in two-disc set. There are a few live Mahler recordings released on other labels (Nos. 1-4, 7, Song of the Earth, etc.), but they are fewer in number than the currently released Bruckner recordings, including live recordings, and Kegel's Mahler repertoire may have been limited. However, there are some scenes in which fiery passions are suddenly revealed, and the general reception is high. In the live performances, the tension is so high and the playing is so burnt out that some people are certain that some of the performances are synonymous with Kegel, but the session recording is a complete turnaround. The session recording is a complete turnaround from the live recording. The resolution of this reissue is much higher than before, and I believe it will change the evaluation of these recordings. The tempo setting also gives the impression of taking more time than in the live performance, and the Mahler performance is finished with a solid structure and sense of style. The coupling is a recording made in October 1977 of Webern's orchestral works in Mahler's margins, which is also highly acclaimed as a masterpiece. Originally, the five pieces were included in the order of the younger work numbers, but due to recording time, the order of the second and third pieces has been switched. Koegel also featured many works of his contemporaries, and all of his recordings have been highly acclaimed.Kegel's Webern is an interpretation that does not seem to simply place Webern as an extension of Mahler as the end of Romanticism, and his interpretation, which seems to be dominated by a worldview that transcends the concept of music, will strike the listener. There is not the slightest ambiguity, and here, too, the excellent modeling ability and the high level of control of the orchestra stand out. There is no doubt that this is one of the best performances in the former East Germany at that time, and will remain in the annals of recording history for a long time. The recording was made by Streuben, and the high quality of the recording is further enhanced by the high sound quality. The master tapes, including the other pieces, are generally well preserved, and the balance between the sound and the silent space behind the sound is superb. The sound quality is also at the highest level of ETEARNA at the time, and this reissue fully conveys the excellence of the recording itself. ~The sharpness of the sound is divine. The performance is solemn and stark, but at the same time, it is a performance of extreme beauty that even has a glamour hidden deep within it. Furthermore, the effect of the high sound quality is tremendous. The high sound quality of the new recording has a tremendous effect; it is able to convey the raw nuances of the music, which I would have missed before. ~The performance is a real stunner.
