The first solo recording of Chris Maene on his new parallel string piano (Straight StrungConcert Grand) is now available on Et'cetera. Chris Maene is a Belgian piano maker world-renowned for his restoration of historical pianos, and the main feature of the Straight Strung Concert Grand is that the strings are not crossed as on most modern grand pianos, but are all strung parallel, like a fortepiano or harpsichord. The strings are parallel to each other like a fortepiano or a harpsichord. Liebrecht Van Beckefort, who plays this piano, is a young Belgian virtuoso who won a prize at the 2007 Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition and has recorded Liszt's Piano Concerto & Piano Sonata (KTC 4037) for the Et'cetera label.Van Beckefort says the piano "combines the sound of 18th- and 19th-century pianos and fortepianos with the possibilities of the modern piano (perfectly tuned keys, balanced register, powerful sound)."
